Data access example and demonstration
The home page for the U.S. GLOBEC Georges
Bank program is located at the following URL: http://globec.whoi.edu.
Follow the steps below to see how to access some sample (test) data and make
a plot of salinity vs. pressure.
Note: Use the "Back" button on your browser to return to these
instructions, or even better, open a new browser window (so you have
two showing) if your browser has this option.
From our home page,
click on the text: "Click here to access data"
- You are now looking at a set of data access and
Click on "U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank on-line digital data."
- You are now looking at an indented list of
the different data categories and an entry for a test and other objects.
Data are organized by categories and, within categories, by year.
Click on the word "test" under the Data heading. (Object
names are listed alphabetically.)
- Data are accessed as OBJECTS. Each object
represents a data set or group of data sets. Since retrieval
can be restricted by position, time, as well as other data attributes
(like cruise_id), it is sometimes better to organize like
data sets together.
- You are now looking at test data entries for
legs 1 and 2 of a sample data set.
Click on "1" under the first column.
- You are now looking at entries for data for
stations 3 through 5.
Click on station "3" [which as of this writing was the
first entry in the first column].
- You are now looking at the pressure, temperature,
salinity and oxygen data. You can scroll through it, but you
can also make X-Y plots of the data.
Click on "Other options" at the top of the page.
Click on "Plot An X-Y plot"
- You are now looking at an inquiry page where you
can select the parameters to be plotted.
Look at the entry box for the X axis variable.
- You are looking at list of possible variables
to plot along the X axis. Not all options are visable at once
but you can scroll through the window to see all the variables
Click on the sal (salinity) variable to highlight and select it.
Look at the entry box for the Y axis variable.
- You are now looking at list of possible variables
to plot along the Y axis.
Click on the press (pressure) variable to highlight and select it.
Look at the entry box for Y options and highlight the
"reverse" option to select it.
Click on the "Make Plot" button near the top of the entry form.
- After a few moments you will be looking at a plot of
salinity versus pressure for leg 1, station 3 test
Click on your WWW browser "Back" button to change what
variable to plot or do other options.
Continue to touch the "Back" button to return to your starting
