Target Species Meeting Agenda

The GLOBEC Georges Bank target species meeting will be held on Jan. 19 - 21, 2005 at the Three Chimneys Inn, Durham, NH. Cod and haddock larvae will be discussed on Wednesday, Pseudocalanus on Thursday, and Calanus on Friday. Thanks to all who have expressed interest in attending. If you would like to attend but haven't yet responded, limited space is still available. Please be sure to register as soon as possible at the following site: http://globec.whoi.edu/m/targetspecies/registration.html.

A draft agenda is included below. Each meeting day will follow a similar format. If you have suggestions about the general format or about items that should be included for a particular target species, please let us know. We would like to start each day with a brief review of the questions about each target species that were addressed by synthesis-phase proposals; please let us know if you would like to volunteer to present a review.

Ultimate Goal

To identify research areas where GLOBEC results suggest a new conceptual model of biological processes in the Georges Bank/Gulf of Maine region and to develop a plan for testing these hypotheses. Specific Goals

To provide updates on population dynamics modeling, spatial distributions, and on egg production, growth, and mortality data.

To identify important events or problem areas that need attention.

To identify what data must be shared amoung groups to further the understanding of the target species.

To compare patterns of variability in target species with one another and with other important species.

General format for each meeting day

Introductory remarks

Welcome and logistics

Review of the questions asked at the beginning of the synthesis phase (10 - 20 minutes).

Presentations

10 minute talks, brief introduction to posters, poster session

Discussion sessions targeting particular questions:

How have recent results and synthesis answered or changed the questions that were asked about the target species? As the synthesis phase is coming to an end, what are the most important questions about each target species?

What data do we have and/or need to answer these questions? What information do we need from different groups?

How are key patterns of variability of the target species related to variability in other species?

Where do we go from here? What additional data from other groups would be most beneficial to answering key questions?
