Hypertext Transmission Protocol

Hypertext transmission protocol was developed several years ago to enable networked computers to view text and images on-line from a variety of platforms.

It was a response to the World Wide Web (WWW) project, started by CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, to build a distributed hypermedia system.

The hypertext markup language (html) is typically used to code the text information. Many image formats, including "gif", "mpeg" and "tif", can be used to display images and movies.
