BO-179-0 Day Trip on the LM Gould, 27 September 2001 Due to full sea ice cover in Arthur Harbor, and the local Bismark Strait region (approx. 2 ft.), zodiac boating is not currently possible. Since one of our objectives is to collect water at inner and outer stations on the Palmer LTER sampling grid, and it is impossible to know when we will have open water, we arranged with the MPC and Captain to use the LMG while it was in port to go to Station C, off shore from Bonaparte Point. We departed at 10:30am, and returned around 3:00pm. Near station C (3/10 mile short of the Palmer LTER Station C), we rigged a peristaltic pump to get seawater off the side of the ship. We collected 221 L from a depth of 45m. We also sampled 221 L of surface seawater from the moonpool seawater intake system. Using the SBE-19 CTD from Palmer Station, we took 3 CTD casts, with help from the ship s crew using the A-frame on the LMG. We will intercompare the CTD data, with the shipboard TSG data, and individual samples collected to be run on the salinometer, currently set up on the LMG. We gratefully acknowledge the Captain and crew of the LMG, the help from the ET for CTD configuration and operational support and marine science support staff in making this a successful day, which really helped us get a jump start on our quick season! The tent also provided shelter against the wind for the tenders and helped to cut down on glare and visual shock for the divers coming out of a darker environment. The two ships parted ways again at approximately 22:30, with the NBP returning to the south and the LMG remaining near Survey Station #19 to establish another Process site. At first light this morning we nosed around the weakly cemented floes looking for an ideal location when a seal was sighted. The seal team handled the animal, then we conducted a CTD cast, and we are currently beginning to work on the ice. Cold temperatures and weak winds make it relatively easy to work outside. It's hard to believe that a week ago this area had only 4 inches of ice with 4 inches of snow on top! No science is being planned or conducted during this transit to our study area. The past 24 hours have brought highly variable winds and dropping temperatures. Colder weather is a blessing because it allows us to sample ice throughout the freezing process. It also freezes the 10 cm slush layer on top of the ice so we don't have to slog through ankle-deep slop to get to the sampling sites. Ice and wind conditions have prevented us from continuing to use the CTD hole that we cut in the ice yesterday; we are unable to reliably keep the hole aligned with the Baltic door. It has been a rather slow science day with the ice collectors being the most active group. No workable seals or penguins have been sighted. The ice conditions prevented us from using the 1-m Mocness so we waited until just before first light to conduct a CTD cast then proceeded with scuba diving and ice coring operations. We are concluding the day with another CTD cast and will discuss our options for tomorrow. Karl Newyear Raytheon Polar Services Company Marine Projects Coordinator ARSV Laurence M. Gould spent the majority of 26 July at Palmer Station offloading cargo. This stopover also afforded the scientists the opportunity to weigh chemicals, autoclave glassware, and perform other cruise preparations. Hero Inlet was rather packed with sea ice, but the LMG eventually made it to the pier. This message serves as the daily sitrep in lieu of weather and sea conditions. Daily metric for 26 July 2001 is IS. Karl Newyear Raytheon Polar Services Company Marine Projects Coordinator ARSV Laurence M.
