At recovery, discovered that net had flipped early in tow, and system and all nets were inverted when retrieved. Tow bridle appears to have caught and tore off one of the strobe system battery boxes. Mounting system of battery boxes (two each off-center of tow point) may have contributed to flipping of system along with sea state and towing aspect. As the strobe system has not been operative to date, remaining components have been removed for last tows on this station. Repairs will be attempted with components removed. Decision taken to allow one additional half day of operations in area as this was the only location of crabeater seals found so far. Late in the afternoon two Adelie penguins were observed on the ice; they were successfully captured, transmitters attached, and released. After discovering very little ice in Lawrence and Hinks channels, the decision was made to move north through the narrows. At least one of the seals previously tagged south of here in Lawrence channel has moved north to this area. Unfortunately, very little ice was found that was promising habitat. The HTI system was calibrated, and a CTD cast performed. A Tucker trawl revealed a high density of adult krill. An ADCP survey was conducted throughout the area to map the currents and bathymetry. Set three singles in the lee at the southern end of Dallman Bay in the afternoon to take advantage of continued fishing in more protected waters. This was followed by retrieving the 5 pairs of bottom pots that were set yesterday. Again had to shut down for weather. Presently it is 2100 and winds have abated somewhat. We will again rig 5 pairs and set in an east to west transect from 80 meters depth to 230 meters. This contrasts to all the other sets which are at a constant depth. After that, net trawling began. We began retrieving the pots at noon. Yield for the past 24 hours included icefish, coriiceps, rocks, kelp, and a red sponge of interest to a scientist on a former cruise. This has been identified, saved and the grantee informed. Weather in these exposed waters has been excellent. We have returned to Dallman Bay this evening and are about to deploy 5 pairs of pots and will continue trawling after that. No fireworks. Dragged nets through the day and retrieved 5 pairs of bottom pots at noon, yielding a very large coriiceps. Experimented with a larger net with a roller bottom sweep and metal doors. Came up with a clean catch devoid of rocks, sponges and kelp. A good catch overall. Returning to Palmer Station for a 1030 arrival tomorrow. Will set several pots in Palmer Basin on the way in, along a line ranging from approximately 30 - 400 meters. Trying new gear and fishing in new areas has been productive. Early this morning weather deteriorated to the point where it was obvious we would not be able to inspect the AWS at Hugo Island. Through the binoculars, it is still standing. While catching a lee on the NE side of the island, we noted one of the fish pots had drifted 4.5 miles into our path. This was recovered. Two out of the remaining three traps have been identified within a mile of their set point but winds and seas are too high for their recovery. We will try again in the morning and remain in the lee of Hugo Island this evening. Tentative ETA to Palmer is 1400 LT on Tuesday. It's worthy to note they drifted from the SE corner of Hugo Island to the NE side during a SW'ly blow, thus a current curved them around to the lee of the island. In the future, if bad weather was anticipated, setting the traps with an anchor would likely prevent this.
