After station 55, we attempted to get to station 56 but ended up a bit short. It was decided that the time that it would take to get there would not be worth it so we did station work approximately 5 miles from the actual station 56. Station 56 consisted of an ROV deployment, an APOP deployment and a CTD cast. We were hoping to get a MOC1 tow in but the conditions did not allow it. The ice here is fairly dense older pack ice with thin ice in between. Everything is covered in a thick layer of snow. BG-246 did ice sampling at station 55 (or what was supposed to be station 55) and had to dig through 1.5m of snow before they got to ice and then pulled a 2.5m ice core. There is a lot of brown algal growth (mainly diatoms) under the ice and snow. Approximately 30 Adelie penguins, 1 Emporer penguin (a rare sight), and several crabeater and Weddell seals spotted throughout daylight hours. Our grid has us heading NW to station 57. The sun was shining, the clouds were few and the scenery was incredible. We are continuing along the survey grid and have completed stations 34 - 37 in the northern part of Marguerite Bay. We met up with the LMG at 0700 local near our station 35 to exchange supplies (various chemicals, nets, live krill, and other supplies). The visit was brief but it was great to see our colleagues. This also presented a prime photo-shot opportunity for the two ships. The bottom topography in this area was quite erratic keeping the BIOMAPER watch on their toes as we towed the BIOMAPER through water of ever-changing depth. The bird observers had an interesting day in that they only saw very few birds. The acoustics also showed very little back-scattering in the water column. A beautiful area but it seems very barren of marine life. Hoping for more days like today, Alice Doyle Marine Projects Coordinator R/V NATHANIEL B.
