File: cruise_met.mat Contents: Basic 1-m underway ship-board meteorological and sea surface temperature, salinity, and fluorense data collected on LMG02-1A for the southern leg between Palmer Station (PS) and Palmer Station. Also included are estimates of the surface wind stress and heat flux, both 1-m and 1-hr averaged series. Date: March 1, 2002 Source: lmg_met1m.mat Processing: 1. Data begins when LMG leaves PS and stops as LMG enters PS. One 41-min gap in most of the variables was filled using linear interpolation. 2. The raw 1-min short-wave radiation data (sw) has a large negative offset during night. This bias appears to get larger during the cruise. This bias was removed using linear interpolation between the lowest sw value before sunrise and the lowest sw value after sunset. The "night- time" values were set to zero. The 41 min gap in the new sw series (swn) was filled with linear interpolation (swnf), then used to compute sw heat flux (with the few negative values left in swnf set to zero prior to the calculation). 3. The 1-min wind stress and heat flux series were computed using lmg_wshf1m.m. Thses 1-min series were then used to make 1-hr average time series, using qneta= boxave(qnet,19,60) (so that the hour average is centered on the hour). 4. All series should be considered preliminary, since the JGOFS wind may differ from the "true" wind (which will be calculated later from the raw met and nav data), and the questions of the accuracy of the sw sensor and data.
