U.S. GLOBEC, with funding support from the National Science Foundation and
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations Coastal Ocean Program
and National Marine Fisheries Service, announces the availability of funds
to support research in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. The Request for
Proposals (RFP) is being released by NOAA and will appear shortly in the
Federal Register. Deadline for proposal submission to NOAA is April 15,
1999. A version of the NOAA announcement can be obtained from the National

Zooplankton meter2 count data and

available via our U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank data management system.
The data, accessed directly from Ted's Oracle database, are
organized by cruise. If you prefer, you can still access
the data directly from Ted's web site at
http://globec.gso.uri.edu/.

- The
EasyKrig, Matlab based, kriging tool written by Dezhang Chu is
available for download from
ftp://globec.whoi.edu/pub/software/kriging/easy_krig. It will operate
on many platforms (PC-Windows 95/98/NT, Macintosh and Unix-based) as long
as the Matlab program is installed. See the

field name search form.
By specifying the field names of interest,
e.g. find me all data with salinity (sal) and temperature
(temp), you will see a list of clickable object links,
providing access directly to the data.

is now available primarily for use by the U.S GLOBEC
Georges Bank Program participants. The

are moderated by the Data Management Office

January 7, 1998
- The new JGOFS software
release, version 1.5 is being used by the U.S. GLOBEC Georges
Bank home page. The data directory has a new look, with listing,
display and other options available via buttons at the top of each
data page when these are available. The data objects are located
near the top of the page and the directory of available objects is
moved to the bottom of the page. Since this is a new release
and some bugs may yet be uncovered, please report any problems you
have to the Data Management Office.
January 5, 1998
- There will be no access from outside WHOI to the U.S. GLOBEC
Georges Bank home page and on-line data on Friday January 9, 1998
from 7:00am to approximately 11:00am. Comm Electric is replacing
the power meters that service the Institution's connection to the
Internet during this time.
December 16, 1997
The new JGOFS software
release, version 1.5, is now available. If you are serving your
U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank data from your computer you can take
advantage of the new features and
capabilities in this new release; however, you do not have to
upgrade at this time. Some of these new features will be visible
within a few weeks, when you access our home page data directory.

Program Phase III Ship Time request is available on-line

Program Phase III Prologue is now available. This
prologue is intended to be a preface to individual proposals
that are being sent to NSF/NOAA in response to the
Announcement of Opportunity
for the Phase III research on
Georges Bank which has a deadline of 15 December 1997 for
submission of proposals.

- The
"Plotting and Other Options Menu" page used to access plot,
list, and data extraction options from the data system is reformatted to
show the different options more logically and allow for easier
expansion as more options are added. Also, the
"Simple XY Plot"
page used to specify the X- and Y- variables
to plot has a new look. Over time, we plan to add new, and
improve existing, user interfaces
to all of the data manipulation and plotting tools.

- A new, more user-friendly, form is used to specify data
value selections (i.e. only view data with certain value(s))
and projections (i.e. only view certain columns of data),
when accessing data. For an example, see the
test
data object.

- Our program's Phase 3 is on schedule. A final version of the
THE U.S.
GLOBAL OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS DYNAMICS PROGRAM , Northwest Atlantic Field
Studies, Phase 3: Modeling, Observation and Process Field Studies,
and Synthesis, Announcement of Opportunity is available
on-line. An open meeting of all interested principal investigators
who plan to respond to this AO
will be held November 3 - 4, 1997 at the Massachusetts Maritime
Academy. More information about this meeting will follow.

- Our program's Phase 3 is on schedule. A tentarive, unofficial,
unapproved version of the THE U.S.
GLOBAL OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS DYNAMICS PROGRAM , Northwest Atlantic Field
Studies, Phase 3: Modeling, Observation and Process Field Studies,
and Synthesis, Announcement of Opportunity is available
on-line. We are now working on the details of an open meeting of all
interested principal invenstigators. The meeting is currently planned
for sometime
during the week of November 3, 1997. More details will

- The hardware and software upgrade on the central server (globec.whoi.edu)

- Alongtrack data for Endeavor Cruise
EN276 is now available on-line. The data set includes ship navigation,
meteorological and sea surface temperature data.
March 8, 1996
- Jim Bisagni is now serving final (compressed), navigated (final but uncompressed) and unnavigated
satellite images. This will allow
investigators to look at very recent satellite images on
a timely basis, recognizing that the most recent images have not yet
been navigated.
- The planned hardware and software upgrade to our Web server is
delayed because of problems in getting the correct disk drive
delivered. We hope to move ahead on this within the next two
weeks.
March 1,1996
- The Other Reports page (now titled "Reports, presentations and
announcements") has been redesigned. It is now divided into
several Web pages to make it easier to locate our reports and
presentations; related reports and announcements of interest to our
Scientific Investigators and others.
February 6, 1996
- On-line bathymetry is now available for Georges Bank from two
sources: bathymetric
data triplets and depth data from ADCP
records.
- It is now possible to get a Matlab formatted ".mat" file of the
data you are retrieving. Choose the "Matlab" option on the "Other
options" page. You can get to this by clicking on the "Plotting and
Other Operations" or "Other options" link at the top of a page of data.
(Click
here for an example.) Save the file on your system as a .mat file
and then use load filename.mat (where
filename.mat is the name you gave the file) from within the
Matlab program. The data will be loaded as vectors, with a separate
vector for each field name.
February 5, 1996
- The U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank central data server and Web site will
be unavailabe Wednesday, February 21, 1996 to complete the operating
system and hardware upgrades. (See What's New for
01/16/1996).

- Broad-scale hydrography data from 1996 are now available on-line.
January 16, 1996
- Meteorological data from Endeavor cruises is now available in both
one hour and one minute versions. The one hour data are a much smaller data set
and more manageable for most applications.
- The U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank central data server and Web site will
be unavailabe in early February
in order to upgrade its operating system to Solaris 2.5 and hardware
(more memory and disk space.) Please contact the Program Office if you have questions about this. Note
that the system will be available January 25th in order
not to interfer with the February 1 due date for Phase II proposals.

- Data from the Bedford Institude of Oceanography, Canada are now available
on-line. CTD data for 1993 and 1994 are available under the
broad-scale
heading and moored current meter data for 1993 - 1995 are available
under the mooring heading.

- The Broad-scale station protocol has changed. See the
new protocol documentation for
details, including a new
cruise track line and a new
comprehensive table of positions, depths and distances between
stations.

Georges Bank Program Scientific Investigators' Workshop 16 - 18

- An updated version of our thesaurus is
now in place. I have redefined many field names and added new field names,
using a
set of guidelines and
much input from the Data Management Advisory Group and the
U.S. JGOFS Program Office.

- AVHRR NOAA-14 satellite images are now available. Note that since the
demise of the NOAA-9 (a.k.a. NOAA-K) AVHRR sensor in August 1995,
only two "k" images are available for August and none for
subsequent months.

- The "manipulating data" option, accessed via "other options" is now
supported. This feature allows you to compute new variables from
existing variables, e.g. rho=28.5-0.2*temp+0.7*(sal-35)

- This is a newly designed home page for the U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank
Program. Contact the program service
office for additions, corrections or suggesttions for
change.
- You are now using the real U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank
computer system. It is a Sun SPARCstation 20. Many thanks to the
Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Program at WHOI and to Professor Glenn Flierl at MIT for the use of their SUN SPARCstation
1+ until our machine was up and running.
- The 1995 cruise year has begun. There are 25 cruises planned for
this year and data will be made available as soon as possible. There
will be some initial delays until some software is completed.
