Process experiments and sampling will be conducted at four stations within the CGOA on three cruises in 2001 and three cruises in 2003. The stations for the process cruises will be selected based on ocean conditions at the time of the cruises, however, the stations will be approximately located as described in the following tables and shown in the figure below. An eps version can be obtained by clicking here.
Station | Prince William Sound (northern end of Knight Island Passage) |
---|---|
Latitude | 60.53392 |
Longitude | -147.8146 |
Rationale | Early spring stratification and phytoplankton blooms; salmon (including hatchery-raised) enter ocean; Large portion of ACC circulates through, with potential chemical and biological modification; potential large export of biomass to continental shelf |
Station | Inner Shelf (GAK2) |
---|---|
Latitude | 59.69167 |
Longitude | -149.32667 |
Water Depth | 220 m |
Dist from Shore | 19 km |
Rationale | Core of ACC on shelf; strong westward transport; earlier stratification in spring than mid and outer shelf; seasonally distinct mesozooplankton assemblage; salmon migration corridor |
Station | Middle Shelf (GAK6) |
---|---|
Latitude | 59.11667 |
Longitude | -148.77 |
Water Depth | 145 m |
Dist from Shore | 91 km |
Rationale | Weak alongshore transport; highly impacted by mesoscale eddies; seasonally distinct mesozooplankton assemblage |
Station | Outer Shelf (GAK10) |
---|---|
Latitude | 58.54167 |
Longitude | -148.21167 |
Water Depth | 1300 m |
Dist from Shore | 160 km |
Rationale | Near shelf break front; seasonally moderate to strong alongshore transport; oceanic mesozooplankton assemblage |
