IBM Simulations of Passive Particles using Flow Fields from
3D Spectral Element Ocean Model Simulations

In 'deepseed' simulation, 27900 particles were positioned in a regular grid encompassing the region from 500-800 km in Y, from the shore to 100 km off the coast, and seeded at 9 equally spaced depths from -40 to -100 m in depth. This simulation tracks the positions of individuals initially located in an x-z plane at 650 km in Y. The animation shows the time history of particles for a 22 day simulation. The FLC animation can be obtained by clicking here.

The animation contains the results of simulations with and without diel vertical migration (DVM). DVM by the individuals initially located nearshore, reduces alongshore transport, relative to passively tracked particles, and individuals further offshore that interact with onshore flowing (upwelling) deep water, are transported inshore.
