In 'deepseed' simulation, 27900 particles were positioned in a regular grid encompassing the region from 500-800 km in Y, from the shore to 100 km off the coast, and seeded at 9 equally spaced depths from -40 to -100 m in depth. This simulation tracks the positions of individuals initially located in an x-y plane at -40 m depths. The animation shows the time history of particles for a 22 day simulation. The FLC animation can be obtained by clicking here. The animation contains the results of two simulations: one with and one without diel vertical migration (DVM). Non-migratory particles at -40 m closest to shore are upwelled to shallower waters, but all particles eventually exit the domain at the southern boundary. DVM by the individuals initially located nearshore, reduces alongshore transport, relative to passively tracked particles, and individuals tend to move inshore, and perhaps accumulate in the lee of the cape. Longer simulations will be required to evaluate this process. |
