This is a model of the Gulf stream showing a growing meander and it's influence on the biology.

The physics here is a two-dimensional turbulence calculation in a 64x64 psuedospectral model.
Various tracer models (passive or active) are included.
To view the movies, you need mpeg_play. For the individual frames, you need xwud
For the runs with particles, the colored field is the streamfunction. The particles are assumed to attract each other: For each particle, you comput a vector attracting velocity for all the other particles and average it. The attracting velocity depends on the separation as u0*(r-r0)/L*exp(-(r-r0)^2/L^2). L=4 and the domain size is 64*0.3
For the tracer runs, the colored field is the tracer and the contours are the streamfunction. The case with only a numerical filter for stability shows a lot of (I think) spurious structure at small scales. The case with a little mixing looks better.
