(Sorry for the "classic" joke.) The good news is that they are actually starting to look at their data, and using the data system to get at the event log data. The bad news is that they may have found some "bad values" in the event log from your cruise. The immediate action is to verify the positions of the stations they mention (see below) and make the necessary corrections. Since this is your cruise, I wanted to work with you on this. The longer term issue is "we need a new protocol". Namely, a protocol defining how updates/corrections should be communicated and accomplished. My philosphy would be that the responsible scientific investigator be contacted, with a CC to me, whenever a data problem is detected. I want to know in case the problem is "large enough" that I should make a larger audience aware of the problem and the solution. I also may need to know, since I may be serving the data rather than the SI (as is the case with the event logs). In this latter case, I need to clear any changes with the responsible SI before I make any changes. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated. Wally and I found (so far) the following four stations to be in error: standard stations # 3, 6, 7, 11. These positions are in decmial degrees. Sta. # 3 is 40.6267 Should be 40.5283 Sta. # 6 is -68.0252 Should be -67.7483 Sta # 7 is -68.311 Should be -67.311 Sta # 11 is -68.4257 Should be -67.96 When Wally did a computer plot of the cruise stations based on the positions from the event log, station # 3 appeared off and is by ~6 miles. The "ground truth plot" is based on the proposed station positions as found in the Chief Scientist manual for 1995. Also stations # 6, 7, 11, plotted a whole degree of Longitude off. That's all for now. John ------------- End Forwarded Message -------------
