Animation of the Gulf Stream, Gulf Strem rings, the
slope water, and the shelf water from satellite SST data and mean
near-surface currents derived from 1997 GLOBEC satellite tracked
drifters
Description
An animation of daily merged SST images obtained from the
Applied Physics Laboratory at John Hopkins University is shown with 5 day
mean near-surface current vectors obtained from 1997 GLOBEC drifters in
regions defined by 1/2 degree (latitude and longitude) boxes. The mean
currents are derived from low pass filtered drifter data over a period of 5
days centered on the date of the SST image. The animation shows the
development of Gulf Stream rings in 1997, their impact on Georges Bank, and
the mean near-surface current field over the shelf, the slope water, and
the Gulf Stream.
