Mean value of Fst_1 = 0.2285
Mean value of Fst_2 = 0.2142
Mean value of Fst_3 = 0.2103
Mean value of Fst_4 = 0.9356
Values of FST range from 0 to 1.0, where 0 indicates
no genetic differences between populations and 1.0 indicates complete
reproductive isolation between them.
FST can be calculated
by:
FST = 3
[Vp / ( p ( 1 - p))] / n
where Vp is the variance of the frequency of
allele p, p is the mean allele frequency across all samples, and n
is the number of alleles.
The statistic of genetic structure, FST,
may also be used to estimate gene flow, which is typically
expressed as the numbers of individuals exchanged between populations per generation. Gene
flow may be estimated by:
Nm = 1 / (FST * 4)
where N is the number of individuals in a given
population and m is the proportion of those individuals resulting from
immigration.
As a benchmark, values of Nm > 1
(corresponding to FST < 0.25), are typical of high gene flow species, such
as zooplankton, which may be expected to become genetically homogeneous in the
absence of counter-acting forces.
