Shows &applet; applet. Contains flag and label of current keyboard layout.

The &applet; applet enables you to assign different layouts to your keyboard to suit different locales. The applet displays the flag and label associated with the current keyboard layout. To add &applet; to a panel, right-click on the panel, then choose Add to PanelUtilityKeyboard Indicator. If you have an old version of XFree, Add to PanelUtilityKeyboard Indicator adds the &applet; applet to the panel, as documented in this manual. If you have a new version of XFree, Add to PanelUtilityKeyboard Indicator adds a different keyboard layout applet, called gswitchit, to the panel. The gswitchit applet is documented in a separate manual. To switch to a different keyboard layout, click repeatedly on the applet until the applet displays the keyboard layout that you want. If the applet does not contain the keyboard layout that you require, see for information about how to add keyboard layouts to the applet. To configure &applet;, right-click on the applet, then choose Preferences. The Keyboards tabbed section lists the keyboard layouts that are currently configured for the applet. To add a keyboard layout to the Keyboards list, perform the following steps: Click Add. The applet displays the Select Keyboard dialog. Click on the arrow next to the country for which you want to add a keyboard layout, then select the keyboard layout that you want to add. Click Add to add the keyboard layout to the Keyboards list. Click Close to close the Select Keyboard dialog. To delete a keyboard layout from the Keyboards list, select the keyboard layout, then click Delete. To move a keyboard layout up the Keyboards list, select the keyboard layout, then click Up. To move a keyboard layout down the Keyboards list, select the keyboard layout, then click Down. To edit a keyboard layout, select the keyboard layout, then click Properties. The Edit Keyboard dialog contains the following elements: Dialog Element Description Name The name of the keyboard layout. This name is displayed in the Keyboards tabbed section of the Preferences dialog. Label A short label for the keyboard layout. For example, the label for a United States English keyboard layout is us. By default, the applet displays the flag and label of the current keyboard layout in the applet display. Command The command that the applet uses to change to the keyboard layout. You can use any of the following commands to change the keyboard layout: gkb_xmmap us where us is the file extension of the xmodmap file for the keyboard layout. xmodmap /path/xmodmap.us where /path/xmodmap.us is the xmodmap file for the keyboard layout. setxkbmap us where us is the file extension of the xmodmap file for the keyboard layout. Flag The flag that represents the country in which the keyboard layout is used. By default, the applet displays the flag and label of the current keyboard layout in the applet display. Click on the flag to display a flag selector dialog. Appearance Select one of the following options from the drop-down list to specify what the applet displays in the panel: Flag Display a flag only. Label Display a label only. Flag and Label Display a flag and label. You must reboot your machine to effect a change to this setting. Switch layout You can use a shortcut key to switch between keyboard layouts. To customize the shortcut key, click Grab keys, then press the keys that you want to use. The applet displays the shortcut key in the text box.
