- Dynamic Planet 2005, Cairns, Australia, 22-26 August 2005.
The 2005 IAG/IAPSO/IABO Joint Assembly will offer a scientific program encompassing the most recent advances in geodesy, oceanography and marine biology. The dynamic nature of our planet naturally creates interactions of life within the oceans, the oceans themselves and the continents and many of the symposium sessions cover interdisciplinary themes. A total of 26 sessions are being planned, including one dedicated to the CENSUS OF MARINE LIFE. In addition, more focussed sessions will include one on PELAGIC BIOGEOGRAPHY. For more information see http://www.dynamicplanet2005.com/.

Workshops

Capacity Building and Training

CMarZ taxonomic workshops address the need for taxonomic expertise for the 15 phyla of animals occurring in the plankton.  CMarZ prepares graduate students, providing training in species identifications, including molecular systematic approaches to understanding species diversity.

CoML DNA Barcoding Workshop, Amsterdam, the Netherlands (May, 2006)

Plans are progressing for a "DNA Barcoding Workshop for CoML" coordinating workshop, which will likely be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 15-17 May 2006.   [CMarZ contact: Annelies Pierrot-Bults]

The primary objective of the workshop will be to coordinate DNA barcoding efforts that are already ongoing as part of CoML projects. The ultimate goal of a CoML barcoding initiative will be to establish a public archive of DNA barcodes linked to voucher specimens (or voucher DNA) for the species of marine life that are being identified or newly described, counted, and analyzed as part of the global CoML effort.

Training Course on Methods of Zooplankton Ecology and Identification: Institute of Marine Environment and Resources, Haiphong, Vietnam
Dates: November 14-21, 2005.  As a part of a co-operative project of the Census of Marine Zooplankton (CMarZ), the Training Course was held at the Institute of Marine Environment and Resources (IMER), Haiphong, Vietnam, during 14-21 Nov., 2005. The Course was organized by Thi Thu Nguyen (IMER), Shuhei Nishida (University of Tokyo: UT), Makoto Terazaki (UT), and Keiichi Matsuura (National Science Museum, Tokyo) and sponsored by the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS: Multilateral Project-Coastal Oceanography [MPCO]) and IMER. Further details.  [

Training Course on Methods of Zooplankton Ecology and Identification:  This workshop was held at the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, during December 2004.  The course aimed at providing graduate students and research scientists in Southeast Asian countries with comprehensive knowledge on the biology, ecology, and taxonomy of marine zooplankton and methods dealing with these subjects, with emphasis on the practical aspects of sample analysis and species identification.  [CMarZ contact: Shuhei Nishida]

At-Sea Training Course in Zooplankton Identification, Monterey Bay , NE Pacific (Spring, 2005) [CMarZ contact: Erik Thuessen & Steve Haddock]

SPICE (Science for the Protection of Indonesian Coastal Marine Ecosystems): hands-on workshop for students (Spring, 2005) [CMarZ contact: Sigi Schiel]

Taxonomic Identification of Copepods: An in-house training program for pre-doctoral research fellows was conducted at Regional Centre of National Institute of Oceanography, Kochi , Kerala , India  (June/July, 2005)   Expenses were met by NIO, Goa , India . [CMarZ contact: Vijayalakshmi Nair]

Taxonomic Identification of Crustacea: Training workshop at the Division of Crustacea, Fisheries College, Panangad, Kochi, Kerala, India. This was funded by University Grants Commission (UGC),Ministry of Education, Government of India, New Delhi, India. [CMarZ contact: Vijayalakshmi Nair]

Coastal biodiversity in Southeast Asia - plankton: This international collaboration will include Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam. The field studies will focus on zooplankton diversity, abundance, and community structure, as well as biodiversity and biogeochemical cycling in coastal waters of Southeast Asia, and marginal basins such as the Sulu Sea and Celebes Sea. Cruises will use the RV Hakuho-maru (requested for 2007) among others. The project will host a training course and workshop, and produce a practical manual, illustrated keys, and species lists. 12-27 Nov. 2005 [CMarZ contact: Shuhei Nishida]

Training Course in Species Identification of Zooplankton: A course is planned for late 2005 - early 2006 to take place at the University of Namibia, Windhoek, southern Africa.   The goal is to address the immediate and critical needs for zooplankton taxonomy experts in the region. [CMarZ contact: Hans Verheye]
