FleetLink Meeting October 9, 2001 Present: Ken Ekstrom, Cliff Gouday, Bob Groman, Dave Mountain, Peter Wiebe, Rollie, Gary (late) Do long term plan today so don't have to meet every six weeks. Small groups can meet as needed during the year. We'll do virtual meetings as necessary. Meetings have served to enforce performance. But if everything is working, then the meetings would not be necessary. Everyone has $30,000 each plus $20,000 pot since the project is a continuation rather than a new project. Ann will sent copies of the paper and Cliff will give copies of his article to Ann. Cliff reminded people that the National Fisherman has an article this week. Ken also made a video of the mixing experiment and gave it to Shelly Lauzon at WHOI. Bob will call Shelly for this video for web placement.Ann will send Bob a PDF file of the annual report to Bob who will put it on the web. Ann asked that Bob check on the National Geographic video status with Shelly. Update Rollie The videos are in Ann's Office. They will be mailed out. Each will get a copy and Bob will get a digital version for serving on the Web. It was also sent to ONR and NOPP program managers. Cliff Asked when the new funding would be coming. Not enough funding was provided for equipment failures. Ann suggested that Cliff buy a couple of APC brand UPS's to replace the ones currently in place since they are prone to being broken. Money is in as of September 1. You can prime the pump by sending a invoice to UNH according to Ann since it is a continuation of the original project. Ann mentioned that Bob wanted to come to the meeting to find out if anything will happen. His system is functional according to Cliff but Bob told us that the NetSensor was broke. There is a replacement sensor available which was the spare used during the tidal mixing experiment. The broken one is still with Bob. It needs to get to Gary for repair. Neither the S&C or Adventurer have a NetSensor. We agree that we want all three vesels fully functioning. Gary Needs one point of contact and know ahead of time. Rollie reminded people that one needs to contact the Captains/owners himself since they are out a lot. Need a phone message, "when you come in, please call." People are busy, doing this as favor, and they've not got anything out of it. Set up to call Eric directly so the person they call is the person who shows up. To fix Adventuer needs lots to get working. Cam wants NetMinder, along with Vemco and NS and compare them. S&K - schrimp season experiment for end of December. Tidal Mixing Equipment Experiment Vemco [V] NetSensor [NS] 4 lines over 3-4 day period 111 cast to NE up to 120 111-182 (183 to be deleted according to Ken) Several casts were missing. There is offset of data going up vs down on NS. Offsets are different between V and NS. 1 == 111 64 = 175 Vemco off by 27 hours NS offset by 27 or 28 hours in some Gary - V and NS numbers go out of sync at some time. Vemco responding more quickly than NS. They generally in well mixed area. V has courses resolution so see more jumping around a bit. Found one problem where data was shifted from one cast to another. Still need to resolve time issues. 15-20 sec time constant for existing system. Data will need post processing. Who and where? Bob Kohl said he did fishing tows with the NS. Need to get the data from Bob K. Quality assurrance issues. Make raw data available together with processed data since it is not ready for prime time. So repaired SST will go on Adventurer. Ken to work with boats to get sneaker net data to Bob G. routinely. NetSensor mods: new thermister would be more fragile. Stay with this thermister and look at troll data to see if okay. If not, then change to faster thermister. So send NS to Cam. He wants to put on the door without the collar. That will work. David repeated the desire to have conductivity information too during tows. Irridium option - Ken interface issues??? Status Report: What's working? What's not? Net Sensor: Is the RF convenience worth the size inconvenience from the Vemco? Peter says that there is a time lag between the pressure and temperature information. Peter is getting help from David to help understand what is happening and comparing the two data sets. Rollie wondered if we could get real-time depth vs temperature to help the fisherman such as NetMinder. How difficult is it to do via accoustics vs the RF link at the end. Cam would like to try an accoustic sensor (NetMinder, $2,500) . There is a question on its response time of the sensor. Ken needs to look into whether it could be telemetred to the FleetLink system. Bob asked if these data were time stamped. David asked what the accuracy and precision of any of these systems. Cliff thought that NetMinder was on the NMFS vessel. Cliff will contact NetMinder for the specs, find out about the data files, and if the result is positive, then Ann can authorize Cam to buy it. Goal will be set up Cam with all three sensors and evaluate and compare them against each other. (Gary will have to repair the NetSensor's as necessary for all three boats.) The IMET sensor that David repaired also needs to get to Gary. Peter would like to complete his look at the Vemco unit to see if it can do the job. David will look into the specs (via Jim Manning) to see if it can last the 4-6 hour tows and collect the necessary data. David will also check with Jim if one can collect salinity data since his project said they would do it. CTD could be used but they cannot be put on nets. From first principals, the NetSensor provides temperture profiles vs. depth and at depth. The data needs to be displayed after the tow to the fisherman. Real-time is necessary. We lost the momentum when we turned off the systrem. It was/is better to do one hourly transmissions with hourly daily. Ann placed a motion that we do hourly data transmitted at all times. The minute data will be collected and hand-carried to Bob for serving after the cruise. Cliff would like to see plots made available via the web. Bob said he could do it based on some work he is doing for the MVCO project. Also add a picture of where the fleetlink assets were located. Bob should develope the system with showing the dot and then get the data displayed when one touch the dot. Then show the captains/owners what is available to see if they have a problem. Real data with positions Real time data with 20 mile domains No position infor No boat name in any option. On a request basis, people can get the data. Should not track the boat according to Cliff. Take real time data for last x hours and smooth it - Ann will propose this via e-mail. No, build something and then try to sell it. More pink and purple. One question was whether to telemeter the water temperature/depth data. The general question is can a data file be transmitted on an as needed basis. Agreed Ken will look into telemetry of these data: one-board editing, possible? Working Lunch Plans for Continued Demo Operations Schrimp idea - real utilization with FleetLink system during fishing. [Peter] Tool to adapt his fishing to avoid too small fish Science study (use CTD rather than FleetLink system!) FL should buy a SeaBird CTD and give to David for use and maintenance. The door is open for special projects through FL. E.G. request to Northeast Consortium and let them know the FL connection. (Development Funds category.) Presentations, Publications, and Press Coverage AGU Ocean Science Meeting - Feb 11-15, 2002 in Honalulu. There is a session about long term data collection global projects. Multidiscenplinary. One paper limit? Not first author. Cliff as first author with Ann to present it. Nov 8 due date. Cliff will prepare the draft. Frontal experiment focus. Describe FL normal mode and use TMF exp for special projects example. (www.agu.org) EOS article Marine Technology venue Press coverage: the more the better. Fish Forum: Rollie to sign us up - early March? Adopt-a-Boat (with FL) Rollie does NEC. Beyond NOPP: Commercialization and Funding Sources Cliff wants to know how to keep us in operation. Is there a sensor that would be helpful for harmful algea blooms? But there so much lab work to do on the water samples, that it is hard to do. Some strains of dinophlagelates are toxic and others are not. So can't have sensor of vessel to do it. SeaKeeper is another contact. David asks what information needed to take advantage of ECOHAB people's understanding. Models need what types of information? Future Meetings: How Frequently? Bob to contact Bob Heinmiller about the Iridium availability.
