Initial Meeting Discussion - July 6, 1999
Wendi White, the general manager at the Portland Fish Exchange,
outlined the following ways she saw the project benefiting the fisherman,
buyers, and the exchange:
- More accurate and timely hails
- As fisherman get ready to return to port they contact the
PFE with information about their catch. This allows the PFE
to have the necessary personnel to process the fish when the vessel
returns.
- The hail information is currently made available to
the buyers and a web- and email- based mechanism to distribute
this information would be advantageous.
- Accurate hails permit buyers to commit to purchasing a
specific quantity of fish which can be useful to fisherman
- Vessel location information (treated as confidential information)
- Helps the PFE to predict when
a vessel will be in port
- Provides additional information in case of emergencies
- E-mail communication with vessels
- The capability to send e-mail to vessels will enable the
PFE to send after-auction price information to their customer's
vessels. This information will allow vessel operators to make
better catch decisions.
