Public Outreach for Oceanographic Research:
A Case Study of the U.S. GLOBEC Program

Britta Hinrichsen

Included Presentations

Following the second mesoscale survey cruise for the Coastal Gulf of Alaska, Northeast Pacific Program (July 21-August 12, 2003), I gave several public presentations about the research project and the website I created for the cruise. The first presentation I gave was at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, Alaska. My goal was to give an overview of the research project and describe some of the preliminary results from the cruise. The audience included both the general public as well as marine scientists. (File: britta_12August2003.pdf)

The second presentation I gave was to an undergraduate survey course that is required for Environmental Science majors. I was asked to describe how I found research opportunities through the Environmental Sciences program at Oregon State University and to share my experience. The class consisted of primarily freshman students. (File: britta_6November2003.pdf)

In January, I attended the national American Geophysical Union Ocean Sciences meeting in Portland, Oregon. I presented a scientific poster that described the techniques I used in creating the outreach website for the mesoscale survey cruise. (File: britta_28January2004.pdf) Directly following the Ocean Sciences meeting, I participated in the Northeast Pacific Program Scientific Investigators Meeting, which was for researchers involved in the California Current System and Coastal Gulf of Alaska Programs. For this meeting, I gave a brief overview of the methods I used in creating the website as well as suggestions for future outreach efforts. (File: britta_31January2004.pdf)

Finally, I have included my honors thesis defense presentation. This presentation summarizes my thesis by providing a brief overview of the U.S. GLOBEC Program and the scientific studies in each regional program, a discussion of the outreach efforts completed in each, and recommendations for future outreach.
