Mooring Positions
Important Notice: Broad-scale surveys need to be aware that
moorings may be located near Broad-scale standard stations #9, 12, 20,
25 and 39 and elsewhere. Watch out for them so that you do not tow too
near them. Give guard moorings a wide berth when sampling.
In general, Science Buoys have sensors and instrumentation on the mooring line.
Guard Buoys typically have no instrumentation, however this is not
always the case. Please check with the investigator for further
details.
Maps of the mooring
locations superimposed on the broad-scale track line are
available:
Map 1 or
Map 1 as tif file and
Map 2
(or Map 2
as tif file).
- Long-Term Moored Program (Irish, Beardsley, Brink)
- Southern Flank Science Mooring:
Note:On Thurs 13 May 1999, the Southern Flank science mooring was
redeployed at 40 deg 58.00 N x 67 deg 19.10 W (standard GPS, not
differential or P-Code, position) between the two existing guard buoys.
In addition an auxillary light was placed on the eastern guard buoy to
replace the one reported out.
- Foam Guard Buoy F:
Deployed October 5, 1998 -
40° 58.044' N x 67° 18.775' W
- Foam Guard Buoy Q:
Deployed October 5, 1998 -
40° 57.962' N x 67° 19.097' W
- Science Buoy D:
Re-Deployed May 13, 1999
at 40° 58.00' N x 67° 19.10' W
- Northeast Peak Mooring: There are no moorings at this site at
this time.
- Dick Limeburner's Moorings - notification was received 20 November
1998 that the following moorings were position between 11/16/98 -
11/19/98:
- 01. "EF" yellow surface bouy 8' diameter toroid with
7' white tower, ra ref, fl y 0.4sec every 4 sec. Position:
41° 44.271'N / 66° 06.524'W (redeployed March 29, 1999)
- 02. "NFS" yellow surface bouy 8' diameter toroid with 7'
white tower, ra ref, fl y 0.4 sec every 4 sec. Position:
42° 04.797'N / 66° 42.002'W
- 03. "ODAS" 6' diameter science bouy with 7' yellow tower,
ra ref, fl y 0.4 sec every 4 sec. Position: 42° 04.801'N
/ 66° 42.162'W
- Note: The mooring has been dragging. Bob Beardsley
is planning to remove it sometime during the week of
January 18-23, 1999 (using the R/V Alpha & Omega II) and
reset it in February.
- 04. subsurface mooring between "NFS" & "ODAS" in
Position: 42° 04.773'N / 66° 42.080'W
- 05. "NFD" yellow 8' diameter toroid with 7' white
tower, ra ref, fl y 0.4 sec every 4 sec. Position: 42°
09.787'N / 66° 42.180'W (redeployed March 29, 1999)
- 06. bottom mooring e. of "NFD" Position: 42°
09.802'N / 66° 42.521'W
- 07. "A" guard bouy 5' diameter with 10' yellow tower,
ra ref, fl y 0.4 sec every 4 sec. Position: 41°
43.946'N / 66° 32.260'W
- 08. "S" guard bouy (same as "A") Position: 41°
43.852'N / 66° 32.092'W.
- 09. "B"science bouy 5' diameter with 12' yellow tower,
ra ref, fl y 0.4 sec every 4 sec. Position: 41°
43.897'N / 66° 32.180'W (set between "A" & "S")
Note; all surface bouys have large watch circles due to prevailing
currents. It is requested that no vessel approach closer than 3/4
mile of any bouy.

- Peter Smith's Moorings (as of February 22, 1999) -
Positions were indicated more generally in a Canadian notice to
mariners on 11/23/1998 at 1850 UTC (M3982). The full complement of
BIO GLOBEC moorings is given in the list below. Each subsurface
pair of science buoys are surrounded by a trangular array of guard
buoys. Only the guard buoys are visible by radar; the floats on the
subsurface moorings are 15m below the surface. Please give these
sites a wide berth.

- USGS Moorings - Marinna Martini reported that all their moorings are
out of the water.
- Report by L. T. Bearse, Master, R/V OCEANUS - February 16, 1999
2/16/99/2115 E.S.T. 3 surface bouys were detected at station #39
visually and by
radar in darkness, all lighted as follows:
- 42' 08.0"N / 66' 01.1"W
- 42' 07.6"N / 66' 00.6"W
- 42' 07.4"N / 66' 01.2"W
No other information is available at this time. I believe these bouys
have not been
reported as GLOBEC moorings thus far. [See Peter Smith's listing above.]
- Report by L. T. Bearse, Master, R/V OCEANUS - February 28, 1999
- globec site "NFS" recover torroid surface mooring 42-04.18N /66-39.92W
- globec site "NFS" deploy discus surface bouy 42-04.58N / 66-42.088W
- globec site "NFS" recover bottom moored "VPR" unit 42-04.14N / 66-42.10W
- globec site "EF" deploy surface guard bouy 41-44.28N / 66-06.72W
GLOBEC site "N.E.peak observed all three surface bouys in proper
positions. NOTE: guard bouy "A" extinguished.
