GLOBEC Software Tools
There are several software tools to help the scientific investigators
acquire, analyse and display information. For further information
click on one of the items below.
A list of JGOFS and related software "wish list" items is available
- AAPLAY: The Autodesk Animation Player is
a program for viewing a wide variety of animation formats, including
*.fli and *.flc file types. You can create your own animation
files too. To get the software, ftp to crusty.er.usgs.gov as
Note that the dta.exe PC-based (DOS) program can create FLC and FLI animations from PCX and
TARGA images and it's an easy program to use. You can also get the
DISPLAY program using
which can create FLC and FLI animations from more than 20 different
formats, but it is not as easy to use as DTA nor does it have as
many options. But DISPLAY does convert and manipulate images
between 20 or so differenct formatst, including GIF, TIF, TGA,
PCX, PPM, Alchemy RAW, and the YUV used my mpeg_encode.
- ftp crusty.er.usgs.gov
- anonymous [username]
- firstname.lastname@example.org [password]
- cd pub/animation/fli
- get dta203.zip
- ATSEE Matlab utility to plot ship's track, station locations,
- CTDPLOT: Plotting CTD Data from the Broadscale Surveys.
- EventLog QuatroPro utility to simplify manual logging of
stations and other cruise events.
- a matlab based utility to generate a basic plot of
the Georges Bank area with isobath lines. You can ftp a
zip file or select the files
tar file of these files is also available.
- GMT - Generic
Mapping Tools used by our "options server" to produce some of the
JGOFS Data System's plots.
- Kriging software: The
EasyKrig, Matlab based, kriging tool written by Dezhang Chu is
available for download from
ftp://globec.whoi.edu/pub/software/kriging/easy_krig. It will operate
on many platforms (PC-Windows 95/98/NT, Macintosh and Unix-based) as long
as the Matlab program is installed. See the
In addition, a Matlab based toolbox was written by
Caroline Lafleur and Yves Gratton, INRS-Ocanologie, Universit du
Also available (to be used in conjunction with the
Lafleur/Gratton Matlab kriging tool) is a "one-shot" Matlab project
written for Jeff Runge. A brief description on how to use this
software is available from the URL
Questions and comments may be directed to: Yves Gratton,
418-724-1741, email@example.com or Jeffrey Runge,
418-775-0676, firstname.lastname@example.org. The software is available as a
tar file, a zip file, or via
anonymous ftp access from globec.whoi.edu,
cd to /pub/software/krigeage.
- Matlab code for local and remote import of JGOFS database data
directly into MATLAB. You need Matlab running on your
machine, including the external interface code to use this
is used to convert a 256-color PCX graphic file (zsoft format) to a
2-color (Black and White) PCX graphic file. In the process of
conversion, dither patterns are substituted for each color in the
256-color file. It is a FORTRAN program which runs under DOS (PC). The
program was written by J.E. O'Reilly, NOAA, Narragansett RI 02882-1199
- A program to calculate sigma T based on salinity and temperature
is available in both a MATLAB and FORTRAN versions.
