More SeaSOAR and HTI11:30 a.m.: Another beautiful day
in Oregon's ocean waters. Chief Scientist Jack Barth visited the
bridge this morning to talk with the Bill Peterson, Chief Scientist on
the New Horizon. The Revelle is eastbound and the New Horizon is
westbound on the same line. Sometime this afternoon both ships
will pass each other.
2:15 p.m.: The Revelle made a Rendezvous with the New Horizon.
Both Chief Scientists were able to talk by radio and share information
on sampling in this area.
The mammal and bird observers have posted their counts for August 1:
124 Pacific White Sided dolphins, 5 Dalls Porpoises, 11 Humpback
whales, and 2 elephant seals.
The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) is an instrument that
provides valuable data to the GLOBEC research effort.
Steve Pierce
is the scientist in charge of operating the instrument and working
with the data. Kasey Legaard, a graduate student from the
University of Maine, is assisting with the ADCP as well as the
HTI. The data from the ADCP has been of interest since
it was first introduced almost 20 years ago. With the ADCP,
scientists are able to more accurately measure and chart the surface
and subsurface currents related to upwelling and downwelling.
The instrument works by bouncing sound waves off particles in the
water and measuring the return echo. By measuring the Doppler
shift of the echoes and subtracting out
the speed of the ship, the speed of the particles and therefore the
speed of the water can be charted. At the end of this cruise the
profiles generated will be compared with other profiles gathered in
this same study area.
