Dr. Stephen Pierce
Research associate
Responsible for the collection and analysis of data from the Acoustic
Doppler current profiler and the HTI towed acoustics instrument. My
research interests include mesoscale physical oceanography and
bioacoustics.
I typically go to sea once or twice a year for 3-4 weeks at a time. When
I was very young, my father and I measured sea level in Popponesett Bay, Cape
Cod, MA, at different times of day. We graphed the results by hand up on the
wall, producing a nice plot of the tidal cycle. I think I was really hooked at
that point.
I always loved physics and math in school, and I was a physics major in college.
I was delighted when I discovered that I could study physical oceanography in
graduate school, applying physics to the study of the ocean.
