GLOBEC Northeast Pacific Program Mapping of Physical and Biological Fields in the Northern California Current July 31 - August 19, 2002

Tammy Baiz
Resident Technician
Scripps Institute of Oceanography

The Resident Technician is a liaison between the science party and the crew. Before the cruise, we help the scientists work out logistic details for the work aboard SIO ships. We prepare equipment and make sure the proper support gear is on board. In port, we operate the cranes and load the science gear. Underway, we are the deck safety officer, making sure gear is put over the side and recovered safely. With less experienced science parties we train scientists in the proper use of various gear, rig new equipment for deployment, and supervise most deck operations.

I spend up to 6 months a year at sea on all 4 ships in the SIO fleet. The cruises range from one day to 50 days in and out of ports all over the world. Tammy Baiz
