Thomas Ryan
My area of responsibility is to detect, count and identify marine mammals using a pair of "big-eye" 25X binoculars that are mounted to the deck of the ship. I scan the surface of the ocean to a distance of 6 miles looking for mammals that are at the surface. When observing marine birds we detect, count and identify birds using hand-held binoculars. What is one memorable experience you have had on a cruise? During the previous GLOBEC cruise we were able to spend some time searching for a group of beaked whales while the ship was in transit. This is a very little known group of whales. They surfaced relativley near the ship in very calm water and many of the researchers from the different study groups were able to observe these unique animals.
