Departure Day
7:15 a.m.: Departure day. It is a
quiet morning on the ship and the wind has calmed down from yesterday.
As the science team arrives this morning the pace of activities will
increase as last minute details are attended to. After lunch
today all scientists are required to attend a safety meeting to go
over procedures on the Revelle. The ship will leave the
dock around 4pm today. Pictures and video will be updated
as the day goes on.
12:00 p.m.: Almost all personal are on board and
settling in. Departure time is approaching soon. The New
Horizon is scheduled to leave at 3 p.m. and the Revelle at 4 p.m.
The photos below, taken from the Revelle, show the New Horizon docked
to the Revelle. This had not been tried before and required
loading the New Horizon over the deck of the Revelle.
Fortunately all went smoothly and both ships are ready to go.
2 p.m.: Getting ready! The planning
meeting for all scientists was conducted by Captain Dave Murline.
Ship policies and procedures were covered for the Revelle.
People involved with launching the SeaSOAR and HTI later this evening
met on the fantail with the captain and Resident Technician Tammy Baiz
to discuss safety issues regarding their deployment.
3 p.m.: The New Horizon has left. Next up:
the Revelle.
5 p.m.: The Revelle is under way! Leaving
the dock went well as did the drop off and pick-up of the coast guard
pilot that guided the ship out of the bay. Shortly after getting
under way, the HTI and
SeaSOAR were deployed and we
started our transit out to sea. Both of those instruments will
be in the water for 6 more days if all goes well.
